African Penguins are also known as Black-footed Penguins, and can reach a top speed in water of 20km/h. Most African Penguins live in island colonies on 24 islands between Namibia and Algoa Bay, near Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

It is only recently that African Penguins have established land colonies, which has only been possible due to a reduction of predator numbers in recent times. Depending on which authority is followed, penguin biodiversity varies between 17 and 20 living species.

The African Penguin belongs to the Spheniscus genus, which other members are the Galapagos Penguins, the Humboldt Penguins, and the Magellanic Penguins.
